Ian Meyer's successful return from injury in SPS Race 3

The popular Balls Head map was the location for the 3rd Sydney Park Orienteering Series race. Peter Preston set a fantastic course that even the most experienced orienteers had to think hard about the fastest route. Unfortunately the poor weather scared the numbers of a bit, but 57 competitors completed the 3.0km course. The course-setter utilised 2 sport-ident controls, that were each visited twice, resulting in several splits for post race analysis.

Ian Meyer made a great return from a recent foot injury, showing he still has plenty of speed in those chicken legs. Ian had a great start, and was leading the field by 34secs at #8. He won in 17mins54secs, just 15secs in front of Rob Preston, who has shown consistent results in 3 races. Andy Hill made a few mistakes to finish 3rd in 19.58 and Glenn Meyer keeps getting closer to the winners in 20.10. The Meyer brothers will soon head to NZ for the Waitangi Orienteering Carnival.

Multiple Australian representative Tracy Bluett made a successful debut in the series, after course-setting Race 1.  She won the women’s class in 21.55 from Mace Neve 30.51. Last week’s winner Caitlyn Anderson was 3rd place in 34.37.

Race 4 of the Park Series is on next Monday 28th January (Australia Day Public Holiday) at Sydney Park. This map epitomises park orienteering, with fast open land, and small areas of complex buildings and was first used for a round of the National Orienteering League in 2005.
