Stingers win Mixed Sprint Relay

Wednesday, 2 April 2008

A contingent of NSW Stingers competed in 3 National Orienteering League (NOL) races in the ACT over the weekend. The highlight of the weekend was a victory for the Stingers 1st team in the Mixed Sprint Relay– an exciting new race format that saw one-man and one-woman teams set off on in a mass start through tricky town terrain.

I ran first leg and made mistakes on the first 2 controls and handed over to Matt Parton one minute off the pace in 12th place. Matt then stormed through the field setting the 2nd fastest time of the day, and set me off in 2nd place shortly behind Jo Allison whose partner Dave Shepherd had, unbeknown to her, had failed to punch a control for the ACT 1st team. The withdrawal of ACT 1 meant Matt set off on his own in the lead on the last leg. A stacked pack started 1 to 2 minutes behind him and joint forces. Matt kept them well off his tail to come through for a 43 second victory. An exciting finish by Briohny and Felicity meant that NSW 2 (Rob Preston and Briohny Davey) and NSW 3 (Dave Meyer and Felicity Brown) dead-heated for 8th place. NSW 4 (Glenn Meyer and new recruit Hilary Wood) finished 15th. We were the only state not to succumb to the pressure and mispunch. The race made for exciting racing and spectating, with the suspense of waiting for your team mate to emerge from the buildings and set off on a final common loop within full view of spectators. The whole relay was over in under 40 minutes for most teams. Results

On the Saturday we also raced the ASC Galaxy Sprint Race at Canberra Uni. For me, controversial mapping of a canopy (as an uncrossable wall) meant I lost one minute running around a building unnecessarily. Other Stingers faired better with Matt Parton again starring. In this NOL Matt finishing just 3 seconds outside the places in 4th place. Rob placed 7th, Eric 10th, Dave 12th and Glenn 16th. The female Stingers formed a tight bunch in the results with Briohny in 9th, Felicity 10th and myself 11th. Results

There was more intense racing on the Sunday with a mass start three loop long distance NOL race in pine forest outside Canberra. I orienteered well though lost a sprint finish with Kathryn Ewels for 3rd place. Felicity also orienteered well, as she did all weekend, to finish 13th and inside the gold badge credits. For Briohny, a bout of gastro in the week leading to the races meant she struggled physically over the 9.6km course and she ended up with 15th place. In the mens, Rob ran strongly to finish the 14.4km course in 8th place. Matt finished 11th, Glenn 12th and Dave 14th. Results
